The French Five Piece Wardrobe

Well like everyone else, I entertain myself via Pinterest.  I recently came across something called The French Five Piece Wardrobe.

5 piece french wardrobe

The Vivienne Files does a nice job combining her Common Wardrobe with The 5-Piece here.

Yeah, well, I'm not getting the leather pants...those days have passed for me.  I also DO NOT need the black suit.  And instead of BF jeans, I go for bootleg every time.  I am not wearing black shorts with pasty white legs.  One last thing...instead of black it is NAVY for me.

Basic Wardrobe

Okay, okay.  I also threw in a pair of nude pumps and not only scoop neck tees but v neck tees as well.  I wear a lot of tees.  I have the grey sheath dress but still want a navy one.

Now I have all my basics except I still would like to get a nice navy dress and I am still looking for all leather, not suede, navy pumps.  Sigh.

According to this 5 Piece Plan, I am suppose to buy 5 new pieces in the Spring/Summer and 5 pieces in the Fall/Winter.  Replenishing basics does not count.  Whew.  Good thing, because I have to restock my white tees every year because of toxic sweat.

***Side Note:  I really like the Banana Republic's New Essential Vee.  I sized up one size for the best fit.  I also like Everlane's Cotton U Neck.  I did my regular size.  Neither are offered in navy at this time.  Damn them.***

This is the plan:

Spring/Summer Purchases

I know there is more than five pieces.  Baby steps.  Because I live in the south, I am claiming the skirt, top, purse, and loafers (I already purchased) as basics.  I really should claim the linen pants as basics too but I was afraid I'd get too much shit from you guys.  The navy blouse has not arrived so not sure if it is a keeper.  The sandals I love but can not pull the trigger.  Not sure if I can really justify them in my wardrobe.  Hunter is already making fun of my shoe quantity.  However, I am trying to move towards no more than 2 1/2 inch heels.  Did I convince anyone?  Anyone?

  1. You convinced me that you must have those sandals because they would be so great with a bootcut leg. Look at how pretty they are, have you tried them on? Those chunky heels are usually pretty sturdy for walking.
I love it when you go over your wardrobe so methodically. Also yay for navy. But why are navy pumps leather not suede so hard to find? I've looked too and it's near impossible.

    1. We do not have any good shoe stores here in Knox Vegas. So, they would need to be ordered. They are pretty. I may have found some Kate Spade navy pumps at Nordstroms on line but the say suede, patent or leather upper. WTF? ! may give them a go.

  2. I love this - if we all had such a clear vision of what we have, and what we want/need, we would all waste a LOT less money, and look better too!
    big hug,

    1. I do try to keep focus but I am easily overcome by The Pretty.

  3. i like bootleg but only with heels but dont do skinny but inbetween straight and slim at the moment only because it just works and i can't bother thinking

without realizing i think i do this except most of my clothes are basics. the only place i go wild is with scarves otherwise i have this terribly sensible side that cant justify it!!

    1. I do like Paige Hidden Hills Straight with flats. I just can't do the skinny...my thighs revolt. I do the boot with boots.

  4. I like the idea of 5 new pieces as long as they spruce up your wardrobe with fun prints-shoes, etc. I'm with you on the shoes-and love the sandals if you can manage the heel height. In your climate linen is absolute basic :-)
I'm a fool for the Everlane u-neck tee. It is just perfect and there should be 15 more color options IMHO.
My next purchase is a DVF wrap dress. I get a lot of use out of the one I have as it is the most comfortable, flattering and easy to wear dress I own and goes equally well for work or evening when I want to dress up.

    1. I have looked on line at the navy DVF wrap dress, long sleeve, but it gets terrible reviews because of the material. The sandals are only 2 1/4 inch high...I know, right?

    2. I'd only get a print DVF wrap in the silk jersey. The prints are forgiving, camouflage bumps and buldges and the silk is dreamy.

  5. Fun post! I've been gravitating away from black for awhile, too. And, I'm more into flats these days, or something with a heel less than 2.5 inches. That said though, a block heel is more stable, maybe you should try those sandals out!

    1. They are 2.5 inches...I can do it. I actually do better with a bit of heel (1") than totally flat. Black has always just been too harsh for my skin tone so navy is the next best thing.

  6. Oh I love this post and have spend an inordinate amount of time pouring over it and clicking in. I would save myself so much heartache if I stuck to the French list. Yes, like you Navy instead of black and tan-ish shoes instead of black as I work from home and everything needs to be more casual for me.
I am loving those Stuart Weisman sandals, those chunkier heels with a strap around back of ankle are so flattering and so wearable aren't they. And introducing a less than glam note, so great for me bunions.

    1. I do prefer simple clothes. I have discovered scarves recently to spruce things up, but the weather here makes them difficult to wear/keep on. We'll see how Hunter's surgery goes. If he's an ass...I'm getting the shoes!

  7. I hadn't heard of the French 5-piece wardrobe only the Irish 7-course meal....boiled potato and a 6-pack.

  8. Don't write off leather pants. I wear them all the time now and it's a mainstay. I'm pretty close to that french way of dressing. I wear mainly black, grey and white with a bit of blue thrown in for good measure. I do like a fancy shoe, though.

  9. I wrote off leather pants, until I unearthed a classic pair from storage! They stil work.
I always like a streamlined wardrobe, but find I look really boring in all basics. I like to shake things up. And yes, Janice is brilliant!
