Mama and Her Brand New Glasses

Well Mom and I went out last week to find her some new frames for her glorious face.

She wanted something a bit more bold.  Sassy Sandy she is.

The issue is she wears bifocals.  The frames have to be a certain size to accommodate the bifocal lens.  Here she is in her old frames, which I do think look lovely.

I got good genes!

Our first stop was Lens Crafters.  I did not keep the picture we took.  The frames were $200 and then with lenses it would be $800...and they were having a 40% off on lenses sale.  Wow.  A bit more than my mom wanted to spend.

Next was Walmart.

Looking quite dapper in cheap ass frames

The frames were $9.  Yep $9 and the lenses would be $139.  Her previous pair of glasses were from Walmart and she was quite happy with the lenses.  We were both a bit suspect of the $9 frames.  $9!!!!  And they might be too small for the bifocals.

Finally, we went to some other glasses store.  We were both a bit over it by now.

Sassy Sandy!

These frames were $140?  and then lenses again were super high.  The frames were a bit bigger and would easily accommodate the bifocals.  So....

We bought the frames, she took them to Walmart for the lenses.  Under $300 for the whole thing.  She is picking them up today.

Oh, and I got a free lunch!

  1. Your mum is a cutie!

Ps a lot of people fly to asia for stuff like this bc my friend pays on average 1000 bucks in Oz bc everything costs a bomb there but in korea her glasses with lens cost 10 plus lens was like 40 bucks so she says next time she'll fly to korea get a holiday and her glasses!

    1. For the price per wear it works out well even at $800...but that is still quite a lump of cash to come up with.

  5. There is a eyeglass company called Warby Parker that sends you multiple pairs that you select online. You the select which you like , return the frames, and send them your prescription. The prices are much less expensive than other eyeglass stores. Two of my daughters and my husband have ordered from them and are all happy. They also have some stores, a couple in NYC as well. Your mom is all set and made a great choice already but thought I would mention for anyone else in the market.

    1. Thanks for the tip. I really was surprised how expensive they could be. She does read my blog and will hopefully remember...or I will...Warby Parker.

    2. We just did Warby Parker with great results and huge savings! I got plain old distance glasses( very sharp looking and $95. with the lens), but MLane needs those graduated bifocals. Saved hundreds on his. We did pick them out in the bricks and mortar on Newbury in beantown, but they will accept returns/exchanges. They really should be paying me...

Your mum did give you great genes!

  6. They look great on her! What a cutie she is. I wear progressives now and my lenses are close to $1,000!! That makes sunglasses a fortune too. I've been trying to get used to contacts but it's a bitch. I really can't see well enough near or far in them:( Getting old is such fun!

    1. She picked her up Thursday and is delighted with them. She can now see the smallest print on the tv. My dad's eyes are actually getting better with age...a bit strange.

  7. The price of eyeglasses, it's insane. My aunt and uncle order from the place Teacups mentioned, saves them a fortune. I don't wear glasses I have freakishly good eyesight, though that will probably go the way of everything else as I get older. Two of my kids and my hubs wear glasses though, we have spendy trips to the optometrist office even though he's a buddy of ours and gives us a big discount.
Your Mum looks like the nicest lady ever, such a pretty smile. xx

    1. I had Lasik done over 15 years ago and one of the best things I've ever done for myself. Both kids and hubs have great vision although Hunter is now in reading glasses.

  8. An excellent choice! I just went with black frames, too. I am always in my contacts however. I don't care for the feel of glasses on my face, though I hardly venture outside of the house without sunglasses. Weird.

    1. I wear my sunglasses even on cloudy days. When I was 14 yo I had braces and bug eyed bifocal glasses. My folks thought I would never get married. A year later, straight teeth and contacts...I blossomed.

  9. Sassy Sandy is the business in Mums! Such good genes. They all look great as she has such good skin.
Like your Mum I just got glasses but with different results. Tallulah was horrified. I have a very square face and to tell you the truth very few of them looked good on me, I just grabbed one of the few that felt light.
The other day some other ones turned up in my bag. Not sure who i nicked em from or where. Someone who loaned them to me in a restaurant Im thinking. Poor thing, that will learn them for doing a good deed.
    Old timers renegade, me.
I wear my sunglasses all the time like you.

    1. I bet you look nerdy in a very beautiful way with those glasses. I am sure, having a daughter, Tallulah is horrified with about 85% of what you do. Daughters...got to love them.

  10. It looks good on her, though I prefer her old lenses. Perhaps, it’s because of its thin and clear frames emphasized the shape of her face and eyes. Nonetheless, here’s to the new glass and the free lunch. Haha!

  11. Your mom looks really beautiful! why can't you explore other option like online shopping of lenses and frames, they provide discount too and will ship it to your home

  12. Frames for Bifocal glasses can be hard to find, unless an ophthalmologist provides you one. Anyway, it’s nice to know that your mom found one that fits her, and she got it at an affordable price. Good day!
