Peer Pressure: Ann Taylor Flirty Skirt

First of all, I want to apologize for any spelling mistakes.  I suddenly can not remember whether it's "ea" or "ee" for just about every word.  When did this happen?

I first saw the Ann Taylor Striped Organza Skirt here and thought, "Well, isn't that cute."  Now, A Bigger Closet always inspires me with her very well put together clothes and really helps me focus on what I have already in my closet.  I didn't have one of these though.

a

And Ann Taylor styled it so well.  Go here.
Well I can style it too.  I was thinking Springtime in Italy maybe...

They recently sent me a $50 off $100 order for making an in store purchase.
Sadly, I am not sure what the hell I purchased.  Oh well.
So let's order the sucker.  I ordered a size 10 and I am not sure if I should have ordered an 8.

First look..

Hmmm.  Not bad.  Still not sold on a chambray shirt (No one tell The Chambray Queen) because it just always feels so heavy.  I have had this for years and probably have worn it three times.

Same styling but with the only other skirt I own...

*************

Second look...

Yes Emily, I have your sweater on and you will now have the "slouchy" look.  Feeling frumpy.

**********

Third look...

I feel a bit flirty in this.  The jacket helps tamper the skirt down.

I'll be in my office going over expense reports.

************

Final look...

Now I remember why I seldom wear this shirt.  Too much material.  Got it to fit the girls but too big everywhere else.  Sigh.

It's a cute skirt but just not made for my body.  No amount of steaming, pressing, will get rid of the big bell shape.  I need to stick with A line or pencil. It is going back.

*********

On other news, I recently read in Hunter's Oprah Magazine....yes, it comes addressed to him :)...that since I am over the age of 45 I should only wear shorts 11 inches or longer.  Do shorts come longer than 11 inches?  Aren't those culottes, gauchos, peddle pushers, capris...pants?!  Now they say if you have great legs wear (see here I struggled with "ea" or "ee") any length you want regardless of age.  For those of different ages...35 and under you can get away with 2" shorts (not sure if I could keep my ass cheeks contained in those).  35 - 45 you can wear 4" shorts.  45 and older, BAM, straight to 11".  Not sure exactly why, I'm not even a big short wearer, but this kinda ticks me off.

  1. I love the black skirt with everything and the white skirt with that black-ish jacket on you. Also the white shirt which you think it too much material - I love that!!! It's tucked into a skirt (who always talks about making a waist? some person on telly/) so doesn't look TMM at all!. I no longer do skirts as I don't have a proper job, I pretty much don't leave the house during the day and I'm too lazy to shave my legs when night falls...

    1. Just too hot to always wear pants and shorts aren't really my friend anymore. I keep trying.

    2. Blogger just told me off for scrolling up and re-reading the shorts length while I was commenting then ate my comments - Ha! Anyway I am a firm 11 incher, tried every pair on in town and Ann Taylor were the best cut. As for spelling, my kids mix up their and there so often I'm not sure any longer which is correct. I need to re-visit the grammer grammar though, participles dangling all over the show at my place..

    3. Hi BB, just actioned a post on auditioning summer stuff and included your photo and linked to you. Just read In Style mag...old Kate Hudson is wearing a really expensive version of flirty skirt btw,

  2. Ah the skirt is just so pretty. It would tempt me as well. I love the feminine, flirty full skirts but I can't really wear them. I think since I also have big boobs a full skirt just makes me look larger and frumpier. So the pencil skirts rule the day. I know they can look a bit too businessy but I can't pull off even an a-line without visually adding 10 pounds. And I definitely don't need that. 11 inch shorts. They would be beyond my knees. That would look really silly. I opt for the 7 inch for hot summer days and just hope no one looks that closely!

    1. See, I know all this but I keep forgetting...or I am just really optimistic. I tried a dress in white that made me look like I was either a hospital patient or at the spa. Em made me send it back....it's now offered in navy! Yes, I am really tempted but already know it will fail. But just maybe...

  3. I like the white, but not love, but really like the black. I do not tuck as I have no waist. there is no point in tucking when you have no waist. but then, I don't wear blouses at all anymore, I think I am getting quite rebellious in my 50s!

    1. You go girl. Rebel be thy middle name. I am trying the "style" tuck with a bit of success except Hunter keeps telling me my shirt isn't completely tucked...men.

  4. I think the skirt is really cute on you, but you have to feel good in it. Those rules for shorts are bad! Basically, you can wear short shorts if you are thin enough? Bad Oprah! I look best in my 5" shorts because I'm short (and my legs are not great and I am not thin). My 9/10" bermudas have their uses but I know I look frumpy in them. I admit I have no use for 2" shorts, though, I want more coverage.

    1. I think five is a good length for me. I was more than a bit surprised by the 11 inch short...I think it stumps a lot of people regardless of age.

  5. I thought all of those worked well except the one you mentioned (Em's sweater); for whatever reason the darker colours worked better and like those tied at waist Italian looks.
I was a champ at spelling bees during the early 70s but also now struggle as I used to be able to tell if a word 'looked' misspelled but now with that sneaky spellchecker (which too often puts a 'here' in for a 'hear') my once taut and toned spelling muscles have gone to flab....but Grandma Cooper's "i before e except after c" still rings in my ears when struggling with 'receive'...
Hunter can't be pleased to be on Oprah's A list!

    1. Hunter has learned to ignore me when I yell, " your Oprah Mags here." I do believe it's one of those free mags for airline points not used but who knows. At least "receive" has more than four letters. I struggle with peek or peak.

  6. I loved the black skirt with everything and the light skirt with nothing! That light skirt looks like it's got a crinoline under it. Why doesn't it stick out like that on the model? She's probably 12 and weighs 95 pounds. I hate when that happens. Plus she appears to be clamping the sides to her legs with her arms! Cheating.
And PS...I can't spell anymore because spell check has beat it out if me. That's my story and I'm sticking with it:). Gorgeous legs doll!!

    1. The puffy part is actually the top layer and yes the model has got to be holding it down...and twelve and 95 pounds. Hope your foot is healing rapidly.

  7. Send that skirt my way, BB! You know, I have tried and tried and tried and tried to wear pencil skirts, but somehow always end up in full skirts. I think it looks gorgeous on you!
I also think 5 inches is the appropriate length over... wait for it... over 30! Though this week we saw a 12 year old at the mall whose cheeks were showing. My husband wanted to run to her a let her borrow his jacket to cover up. I reminded him that sadly, this is how kids dress these days. Don't I sound old? And I'm only in my early 30s.

    1. It really is a cute skirt and pretty simple construction if you want to test your sewing skills. I thought only teens wore 2 inch shorts and the rest of us wore 4-7 inch. If you are going to wear shorts I say let the thighs out otherwise wear pants, capris, skirt, or dress.

  8. I prefer the black skirt but I do love basic black. The white looks far too poofy...
By the way, when I signed up to follow your blog I saw that your picture was not a blue bra but two blue webbed feet....all along I thought blue booby was something else! My apologies for my terrible eyesight.

    1. The skirt is actually navy...I love navy. We went to the Galápagos Islands several years ago and that is where the moniker comes from. You are not alone in thinking it is a bra. :)

    2. Oh I must confess to being a bit relieved that I was not alone!
I met a teacher once who had visited the Galápagos Islands and she took hundreds of photos and treated us to a slide show....it looks like the most amazing spot.

    1. I ordered the EF dress in large and returned for a medium. It was on back order and finally arrived at the end of May. Em was home and said I looked like a hospital patient...something was a bit off for me. They now have it in navy/ink and I was tempted to order again but my stylist just said "Mom?!"
