Let's Get Packing for Italy

Okay, so what to bring to Italy?

Image of a US passport cover

27 euro g x 300x201 Euro collapse contingencies at Davos

Card Type
Patagonia Women\'s Barely Hipster - Opal: Lilac Bisque OPBQ-995
Nike Eclipse II Women\'s Casual Shoe Black/Grey/White

Now time for all the fun stuff.

3 Nights in Venice

Not sure if I am bringing the white coat.  I may do my leather jacket instead.  I do not own "walking" shoes...it's Nike's or nothing.  Hopefully my scarf will detract from my feet.

4 Nights in Tuscany

This is going to be REALLY fun.  Not sure what we will do on our off day...foot rubs and sleep?  The weather should be warmer so out come the sandals.

3 Nights in Florence

Do not worry, if the tootsie's are not aching I will wear the loafers.  The sneakers are just in case.

Okay, what am I missing????

  1. Oh yeah you! Great looking choices! Assume you know and card was example, but we found Amex was almost never accepted in Europe - it was visa almost everywhere, I'm am so excited for you!

    1. The Amex is for the ATM machines...which will accept. Otherwise, yes I have learned MasterCard/Visa is most commonly accepted. I shall report back on all my eating, lounging, people watching.

  2. So thorough, and such great choices! You are really organized. I hope you have a wonderful trip/. Now that sneakers are all over the runways, I wonder if they will still point us out as being Americans?

    1. And, I can not imagine you are missing anything. I am very impressed.

    2. Looks like a good assortment of clothes. No mention of how long you'll be gone but you have 9 tops, 3 pants, a skirt and a white dress and white coat. That's a lot of clothes to schlepp. Have you heard that some Italian cities are banning roller bags? If this were my vacation, I'd eliminate 1 pair of pants, swap out the skirt for a black pencil skirt that can be dressed up of down. I'd really rethink the white dress/white coat for traveling. I'd reduce the number of tops buy I would add a very dress top that can be paired with the skirt for dressy occasions in place of the dress. I never take more than 3 pairs of shoes, usually one two. I might mention I never take more that 13 lbs. (total) of stuff in one small carry-on bag (no wheels). I no longer worry about lost luggage and I can carry my own suitcase for a long distance very easily.

    3. KnitYarns, no other shoe is quite as comfortable and allows the feet to swell than sneakers. Love them.

    4. Dotsybabe, I love an efficient packer. I did go back and noticed one top is only used once...that's a goner. I am a bit apprehensive on the weather and therefor an extra set of pants. Of course I still have to stuff it in the bag so the sandals and a pair of pants may need to be removed. You gave me a bit to think on...will tweak just a bit.

    5. Dotsybabe, I agree. BB, this looks like too much stuff to haul around. I made the same mistake when I went to Italy a few years ago.

Personally, I'd ditch the dress, limit to two pairs of pants/jeans, forget the button down since it would need ironing, just take the leather jacket and no white coat, and take three pairs of shoes only. One handbag, one clutch. The skirt will function better than a dress because you can wear different tops with it and change the look. I'd probably forget the sandals, too - but BUY some Italian shoes while you are there!!!!!!!!!!!!

Looking forward to hearing all about this grand adventure!

    6. Vava, I shall be shopping in Italy and thus will need extra room in suitcase!

  3. Great choices! I loves me a big old pashmina to drape over myself on cold airplanes and in churches. Other than that, just a MasterCard. I'm soooo jealous. You will have an amazing time!

    1. No pashmina here, I'm stuck with the airplane blanket in a bag.

    2. You can get anything you need there. There are scarf shops on every corner. Ditto for leather. Madova gloves in Florence is the best. Like butter! Did I mention I was jealous?

  4. Looks great. You will have a wonderful time! I'd personally opt for a leather jacket rather than a white coat. Don't forget a travel journal or to keep notes on your phone or tablet. I love knowing where we stayed and the favorite meal of the trip. Have fun!!!!

    1. I am ditching the white coat. With the time of year, I am afraid I will need a jacket and I really do not want to purchase one if i don't need to...been there, done that, one three other trips.

  7. Hello,

What excitement as you plan for your Italian adventure. We cannot offer any style advice........usually we forget to include everything essential but always remember what is not required. Still, we argue to ourselves, if we have passports, tickets and money......then, there are shops!

We never go to Venice without our trusted copy of Hugh Honour's 'Companion Guide to Venice'. Not really a guide book, more of an appreciation of the art and architecture of this most magical of cities. It brings the place to life.

    1. Yes, I have forgotten to pack underwear before...it happens. Thank you for the recommended guide book. I am excited to experience the history of both Venice and Florence.

  8. Everything looks good, I like the colors. We bring our own mosquito repellant in Venice/Tuscany as we want to sleep with windows open. Florence sun can be a scorcher so maybe a Panama hat? I like the Biltwell Hat for Madewell. Robert Kahn's City Secrets Florence Venice is very good and small/thin to carry around.

    2. With my pasty skin I definitely need a hat...thanks for reminding me. Had not even considered bug spray. Shall pack some of that.

  9. When will you be there? As Marie mentioned it can be really hot in summer so jeans are far too warm then, as are sneakers or any other kind of 'closed' shoe. I also find that loose fitting tops (natural fibers like cotton, linnen, silk) are best, add a cardigan for the (very rare) chilly evening and you're good to go.
Even in April it can be hot, I once spent two weeks in Florence in April and it was about 30C/85F. That said it is usually a bit cooler in April. Layering would be a good idea and that way you can cover a wider range of temperatures. Hope you have a great trip!!

    1. We shall be there next week. I am checking the weather everyday. I have a tendency to dress for warmer weather and have learned to ALWAYS bring a sweater and a pair of jeans even when going to the tropics.

  10. I'm on holiday in Italy at the moment. And I can say that those sneakers will fit right in. Right now, Easter, it's a little chilly in the shade, yet every 2nd Italian is wearing a puffer jacket (men too!) if you're coming later in summer, maybe a blazer. But. Definitely scarves that can double as shawls...

  11. I am amazed by your level of organization. Everything looks perfect to me. It is a good thing some of your commenters don't see what I pack. They would be aghast. The only saving grace for me is that we frequently travel with a couple who pack even more than me! Trying to throw all the bags on a train in Avignon France during the short time allotted and the dirty looks from the fellow travelers will not soon be forgotten! I guess the only thing which I find helpful in varying temperatures is to have a couple of lightweight rectangular scarves which can be used to wrap around the shoulders or double around the neck. I seem to be able to adjust to an almost 10 degree temperature change with the addition or removal of these light wool scarves. I know someone else already mentioned it but they don't take up much space and they are so useful. Well everything is ready so now just get psyched for a fabulous anniversary celebration! Happy 25th lovebirds!

    1. We will be there for 10 nights and I know I will tire of my clothing...plus it may look tired ...if I can't change it up a bit. I try to wear everything three times, I am re editing, therefore I won't NEED to do laundry or feel pressured to buy anything. Hunter actually takes more crap than I do. he is also much messier :)

  12. You're missing a collapsible bag to carry all your loot home in. It's going to be so damn fun!!! xoxox

  13. I think I would take less and enjoy shopping to add pizzazz. Especially shoes. What about PJ's or sleep shirt? I get a travel size of vodka from the plane and put a spray top on. I use this to spritz clothing at night to refresh pieces. Since you are spreading your stay over 3 cities it shouldn't matter that you repeat outfits or garments. I would definitely take a scarf for plane, churches as well as buy one there. I think part of the joy of traveling is to buy great wardrobe extenders that remind me of those travels. I also slip my cross body bag in my larger tote. It can become a clutch and is easier to carry when shopping and sightseeing. I have the larger tote when the need arrises. The rule is take half as many clothes as you think and twice as much money. Te He
    Have a lovely time.

  14. Who travels halfway around the world to do laundry? I think your plans are brilliant, and you got some terrific tweaks here. I always have an extra set of undies in a plastic bag at the bottom of my purse, we've had luggage go astray... If I have the room, I bring extra shoes.

    Buon viaggio!
