My Big Week of Suck

Usually a week is Sunday through Saturday.

I'm going with Monday through Sunday for this week.

Monday:
Lovely day.  Work.  Dinner.  Bourne Identity.  Ice storm begins.  Power out 9:30 PM.  Off to bed.  Smoke Detectors set off at roughly midnight (no real idea since power is still out).  Smoke Detectors go off again roughly fifteen minutes later.  Damn batteries didn't last long.  Disengage all smoke detectors.  Wide awake.  Cold.  Suck.

All Ice
Tree down by my driveway

Tuesday:
Still no power.  We are on a well so we have no water either.  Thermostat says it is 54F inside.  Phone says it is 4F outside.  Start calling utility company.  Have breakfast on the gas cook top.  Start the gas fireplace (pretty picture but doesn't heat worth shit).  Walk to the office because we do have wood burning heater there.  Get warm.  So bored.  Hunter ventures out and finds where the line is down from a frozen tree branch.  Continue to call utility company.  Snow is coming tonight.  Head to inlaws for some warmth and a hot meal.  Snow and ice is coming again so we head back home.  It is now 45F inside our house.  Off to bed at 8:00PM...still no power.  Slept horribly.  Suck.

Yeah, this is what I wore all day.  Inside.  Outside.

Deer tracks

Two huge pine trees down on track

Coyote tracks

Wednesday:
Still no power.  Call utility company at 6:00AM.  They know about all of us (about 18 homes) and should get to us soon.  Wait.  Wait.  Wait.  Call utility company again at 10:00AM.  They are not sure they will get to us at all.  What?!!!!  Major Suck.  Hunter gets friend to bring a turbo heater and a big kerosene heater so the house will not freeze.  Now down to 39F inside.  Paranoid my whole home will burn so I stay watching my breath.  Can't take it any more.  Head out to my folks place (they are cruising around New Zealand and Australia, bastards).  On our way....Utility trucks are coming!!!!  Turn around.  Wait.  Wait.  Wait.  Fuck it.  Head to my folks house.  Shower.  Shave.  Watch Justified.  Call from utility company, power is on. Yay!

The trees looked like they had tinsel from all the ice.

Thursday:
I am warm.  I am toasty.  I am so happy!

I've been Dying to see this again! Best part of the movie!! Fresh for your board! Dancing Baby Groot!

Nothing can spoil my mood.

Friday:
Head out my driveway for the first time.  Go to grocery store.  Power slide into a small bank trying to turn back into my driveway.  No harm.  No foul.  Head out to my father in law's to pick him up so we can do Mobile Meals.  Turn off car.  Won't turn back on.  Suck.  He drives and I fear for my life everytime he slams on the brakes to stop.  Hunter fixes my car.  More snow.  More freezing temperatures.  Suck (but I've got power and heat and flushing toilets again).

Saturday:
Iced in.  Dinner with friend cancelled.  Hunter tries to get out.  Slides his truck down driveway into yard.  He's stuck.  Suck.

That's our office and the driveway we have been using to get in and out.

Slid quite a ways and then tried to get traction.  Nope.

Sunday:
I have never shoveled snow before.  I never wanted to do it.  I definitely don't want to do it again.  But Hunter wants my company..can't say I am much help.  We have to get the snow off so the ice will melt before it freezes again tonight.  Suck.

    1. My folks are in Australia. My brother in law and his wife are in Mexico. And my sis lives in Florida. Sucks! I asked Hunter if we could get out where he wanted to go and he said Jade Mountain...never been but suddenly looks very appealing.

    1. Coyotes are the size of large dogs but they have bigger feet. Fortunately between our house and office we have four toilets which meant four flushes plus I had water for to fill up tanks for two more flushes...was about to get ugly. I've had bad days before but never an entire week.

  4. Shovelling snow does suck! So does ice, snow and freezing one's ass off. Darling we have this weather but we have all the systems in place, when it happens down south it's a total disaster. You and Hunter are going to need snow tires if these sucky winters continue. Stay warm xo

    1. After Tabs post I hate you all :) Either these winters have to get milder, we have to move farther south, or we shall start vacationing over the winter.

  6. Hello,

Oh dear, this does sound as if you are having a miserable time in this unrelenting bad weather. Just carrying out the most basic of tasks takes all one's energies and being cold is certainly very uncomfortable.

It is as if you are getting everyone's share of the winter weather. Here in Budapest there has been very little snow and this is most unusual. It seems incredible that you could come here to warm up!!

Take great care.......all will be well!

    1. Budapest is sounding quite delightful. We expect three more days of "wintry mix". By Sunday it should be 60F and beautiful.

  7. Losing power for days suck. We lost it for a week last summer, which you think would be preferable but we are on well, too, and it was horrid and boiling. We are so buried with snow up here can't even imagine when it will go. We all have winter tires here but I can see why you wouldn't. Hope it gets warmer soon!

    1. I have never been with out power for more than 5 hours. I can not image 2 weeks. I was pretty whiny then found out my neighbors husband is on dialysis at home...she was in quite a panic. Put me in my place quickly.

  8. What a parade of horribles. Wherever it is, I can always recognize the home of someone who grew up with a lousy power company - candles in every room, flashlights in the night tables, boxes of matches on the bookshelves, batteries in the freezer... and real efforts to have a fireplace. Around here these days lots of people have bottled water, so that's no longer a tell. I pathologically insist on a gas stove.

When the state first threatened to take over the Long Island Lighting Company (where the idiots go to die), the utility promised to reorganize. It hired a consultant and changed its name. My father's comment: "Yeah, we know where they live."

    1. Oh the bastards forgot about us. They managed to fix several areas within a two mile radius but just couldn't get to us. I put them right up there with the cable company.

  9. What a horrid situation! Glad to hear you got your power back on. This sort of thing is dreadful!! Keep warm!!

  10. Absolutely intolerable! And what an understanding and patient wife you are! I'd have been waiting in the car, bags packed, puppies on my lap, rooms booked at the Ritz Carlton...

  11. Hope things are better now. Laughed outloud as I shared this post with my coworkers. We have been dealing with it too but luckily no power outage or busted pipes. School was out all week and I am sick of looking at boots, coat & gloves strewn everywhere. I'm sure you really wanted to replace the s in your tittle to a f!

  12. So sorry to hear about your week of suck. If it makes you feel better, and just because misery loves company, some lady called me right before 6 am and left a message saying she was feeling much better from her shortness of breath since she took the water pill, and to call her back when I can. I'm in CA, she was clearly somewhere East and maybe she thought she was talking to her Dr? My alarm wasn't supposed to ring until an hour after. She woke me up, and scared the crap out of me, because who the f would be calling at 6am? That's my story of suck.
